Children to Be Offered Chickenpox Vaccine on NHS from 2026

Children to Be Offered Chickenpox Vaccine on NHS from 2026

The UK government has announced a historic update in child healthcare. From January 2026, children in England will be given the chickenpox (varicella) vaccine free of cost under the NHS routine immunisation programme.

Key Highlights

  • MMRV Vaccine: The chickenpox vaccine will be combined with the existing measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) jab, making it an MMRV shot. It will be given at 12 and 18 months of age.

  • Free for All Children: Every year, around 500,000 children are expected to benefit. Previously, parents had to pay around £150 privately for this protection.

  • Health Benefits: Chickenpox may be mild in most children, but it can cause serious complications such as skin infections, pneumonia, brain swelling, and even death. On average, about 20 people die each year from chickenpox-related issues in England and Wales.

  • Saving Families & NHS: The vaccine is expected to save the NHS £15 million yearly and reduce parents’ lost working days worth £24 million per year.

  • Why It Matters

Countries like the USA, Canada, Germany, and Australia already vaccinate against chickenpox, which has reduced hospitalisations and severe cases. With this rollout, the UK joins them in protecting children and supporting families.

  • Expert Opinions

    • Dr. Gayatri Amirthalingam (UKHSA): “For many, chickenpox is unpleasant. But for some, it can be life-threatening. This vaccine will save lives.”

    • Amanda Doyle (NHS England): “A hugely positive step for families, helping children stay safe and reducing disruption for parents.”

    • Final Thought

    • This is the first new childhood vaccine in the UK since the MenB jab in 2015. By adding the chickenpox vaccine, the NHS is building stronger protection for the next generation. Parents can feel more confident knowing their children are safe from a disease that once caused so much stress and worry.
